3 Below: 10 questions we have after watching season 1

The town of Arcadia Oaks just got weirder with the release of DreamWorks Animation’s 3 Below on Netflix. Here are 10 questions we can’t stop thinking about after watching the first season.

3 Below is the next exciting chapter in Guillermo del Toro’s Tales of Arcadia trilogy. Like its predecessor, Trollhunters, the 13-episode season contains plenty of humor and action and touches on real-world issues.

The story follows two royal teenagers, Aja and Krel, from the planet Akiridion-5. After the invasion of their home, the siblings and their bodyguard, Varvatos Vex, escape and travel to Earth. Upon arriving, they crash land in Arcadia. Not only do they struggle to blend in and keep up with human culture, but they also have to worry about intergalactic bounty hunters and repair their ship in order to save their home.

The first season left us hanging with several questions. Let’s start off with the main antagonist of the series, General Val Morando.

Why was Morando exiled?

Morando comes across as your typical villain with a simple motive. He believes the throne rightfully belongs to him, and he’s willing to do anything to get it. Queen Coranda describes him as a traitor to Akiridion-5 who was exiled, but we want to know why?

Villains are more interesting when they‘re multi-dimensional and have depth. What did General Morando do to mark himself as a traitor? We hope this gets fleshed out in the second season and adds more to his character.

Will we learn more about Seklos and Gaylen as well as the creation of Akiridion-5?

In Trollhunters, Jim Lake Jr. summons the power of his medallion by saying the words “For the glory of Merlin, daylight is mine to command.” In season 3, we learned more about Merlin and how the amulet was created. These details played in an important role in the story, so will we see the same treatment in 3 Below?

We briefly learned about the creation of Akiridion-5 in the season finale. According to King Fialkov, Gaylen created the planet. It sounds like a fascinating history lesson, so we hope it’s expounded upon in the next season.

Will Staja go far?

We didn’t see the Steve and Aja pairing coming, but we’re so happy it exists because they are absolutely adorable. We can tell they truly care for each other, but what’s going to happen when the time comes for Aja and Krel to go home?

Jim and Claire in Trollhunters started off similarly. Over time, they developed deeper feelings for each other. Even when Jim became part troll in the final season, they stayed together. Will Steve and Aja’s sweet romance survive the long distance?

Where is Zeron Alpha taking Varvatos?

At the end of the first season, Varvatos does an incredibly selfless thing by using his ship as a weapon against the bad guys. He comes out relatively unscathed, but the bounty hunter Zeron Alpha turns up and knocks him out before taking him as a prisoner.

Where is he taking Varvatos? Is Alpha taking him back to Akiridion-5? If he does and Varvatos manages to escape, he could potentially join the planet’s resistance group against Morando and help bring a new and fully functional ship over to Aja and Krel back on Earth. It’s just a theory, but we’ll have to wait and see whether it pans out.

Will Varvatos be forgiven?

Varvatos made a terrible mistake on Akiridion-5 by lowering the defenses and allowing Morando to infiltrate the planet. He put the royal family and his entire homeworld in danger all because he wanted revenge.

What sort of punishment will await him when the parents fully regenerate and awaken? Will the royal family forgive Varvatos for what he did? It’ll be interesting to see how the show handles this part of the story. Hopefully, it won’t be glossed over.

Will the parents play a bigger role?

One of the details we enjoyed in the third season of Trollhunters was seeing the parents more involved in what their children were doing. Of course, they feared for their children’s safety, but they were supportive and encouraged their children to do the right thing.

King Fialkov and Queen Coranda will eventually emerge from their pods after the spaceship finishes processing their new bodies. Will they take action the moment they wake up? Or will they allow their children to lead and make the calls?

Will scenes or characters from Wizards appear in the series?

Wizards is the third and final chapter in the Tales of Arcadia trilogy. According to the official synopsis:

"DreamWorks Wizards brings together the three disparate worlds of trolls, aliens and wizards who have found themselves drawn to Arcadia. The final chapter of the Tales of Arcadia culminates in an apocalyptic battle for the control of magic that will ultimately determine the fate of these supernatural worlds that have now converged."

To demonstrate how the worlds are connected, there have been cameo appearances and references woven into the individual shows. For example, Aja and Krel made their first appearance in the third season of Trollhunters. We also saw Jim and the gang in 3 Below.

Will characters from Wizards appear in the next season of 3 Below? Some suspect Douxie from Trollhunters is a wizard, and even though he made a brief appearance in 3 Below, we don’t really know what to expect. We’re curious to discover more exciting details next year.

What will Eli do with the photos he took?

At the end of the season, Eli took photographic evidence of Aja and Krel in their natural state. What if the photos fall into the wrong hands? Or worse, how far is Eli willing to go to prove his theories have been right all along?

Technically, we already have an answer to this question. Looking back at the Tales of Arcadia trilogy teaser, we see Eli share his photo with Toby Domzalski from Trollhunters. It bridges the gap and brings the worlds of trolls and extraterrestrials closer together.

Still, we can’t help but wonder. Will Eli’s photographic proof have any serious consequences?

Will we get an update about Jim and the gang?

After the battle with Gunmar in Trollhunters, Jim, Claire, Merlin, and the trolls left Arcadia and went to New Jersey in search of a new Heartstone for Trollmarket. We haven’t heard from them since.

The second season of 3 Below will take place after the battle, so will we find out through Toby how Jim and the gang are doing? We’d love to get an update and hear how things are progressing for them.

Will we get an art book and other merchandise?

3 Below is a stunning series with remarkable character designs as well as complex and detailed backgrounds. It deserves to have its own art book, especially since Trollhunters will be getting its own art book in 2019. It’ll give fans the opportunity to learn more about the show through concept art and production notes.

Not only that, but Trollhunters has a series of adorable and incredibly detailed Funko Pop! figures. We’re certain the Funko versions of the 3 Below characters would look just as amazing, so here’s hoping these items will be available in the near future.
