His Dark Materials: Everything we know so far about the television series

His Dark Materials, based on the Philip Pullman’s fantasy book trilogy, is coming to the BBC. Penned by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child playwright Jack Thorne, here is everything we know so far.

If you are a fan of Philip Pullman’s fantasy book trilogy, His Dark Materials, there is some good news for you. The books are being adapted into a television series, written by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child playwright Jack Thorne.

The series consists of Northern Lights, commonly known in the US as The Golden CompassThe Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. There was an attempt to turn the fantasy novels into a movie series, The Golden Compass, which starred Daniel Craig, premiered in 2007, however it failed to pick up any traction and subsequently was shelved.

More from Harry Potter

The BBC is taking another crack at the franchise however by adapting it into a television series. While we Potterheads will all know Jack Thorne from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the screenwriter has a long, and proven track record, of writing successful movie and TV scripts.

Filming has reportedly ended and His Dark Materials is expected to premiere in 2019. A specific date has not yet been announced, or official confirmation the series would arrive in 2019.

Those lined up to star in the series include James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson, Dafne Keen, Lin Manuel Miranda. We also have Clarke Peters, Georgina Campbell, Anne-Marie Duff, James Cosmo, Will Keen, Ariyon Bakare, Lucien Msamati, Mat Fraser, Geoff Bell, Simon Manyonda, Archie Barnes, Lewin Lloyd, Daniel Frogson, and Tyler Howitt appearing in the series.

Right now it is being billed as a BBC series only. There is no official word that the show will move across overseas but it would be a huge surprise if it did not. With it still being early days for the show, discussions about international broadcasting have most likely not taken place but it will do eventually.
