This year was full of worrying political stories. It wasn’t all bad, however. Here are 10 of the most inspirational political events of 2018.

Let’s be honest. It can be incredibly difficult, if not entirely impossible sometimes, to feel positive about the world of politics. It’s a complicated realm, to be sure, one that’s full of as much hope and promise as it is compromises and moral uncertainty.

Sometimes, it helps to elevate things. Historically, writers like the poet John Dryden have used the Latin term annus mirabilis, or “year of wonders,”  to describe a year that wasn’t merely joyous or good, but full of spectacular events. This would be a year that anyone would remember, maybe with a sigh, maybe with a smile, a scream, a shout, and everything in between.

Later, Queen Elizabeth II would use the phrase annus horribilis. She was describing the year 1992, wherein members of her family very publicly behaved badly, two of her children separated or divorced, and one of her homes caught on fire. Perhaps the phrases being used by heads of state is a bit too rich for your taste. Or, maybe for 2018, it feels about right. We’ll let you decide.

For many, there’s no denying that 2018 was a remarkable year in politics. There was plenty of negative news and even more news that will be sure to leave a complicated legacy. We’ve spent the whole year trying to decipher some of it.

But, for now, let’s take a rest and reflect on some of the more heartening stories of 2018. Here are 10 of the most inspirational political events to take place this year.
