She-Ra Princess of Power
The what: Audiences of a certain age may remember the 1980s incarnation of this show, as it was a spin-off of He Man and the Masters of The Universe. Much like the original program, Netflix’s She Ra tells the story of an orphaned young woman, Adora. When Adora finds a magical sword, she leads a rebellion against the evil Hordak and his Horde. She forms the Princess Alliance, a group of other young women with special powers, and this pits her against her former friend, Catra.
The feels: For this ’80s baby, I am aglow with nostalgia. The original She Ra was a bit of a programming anomaly. There were very few depictions of female heroes, and She Ra became the heroine for us all. These days, Netflix has taken up She Ra’s feminist and inclusive intentions and did us one better. The show has been praised for its depictions of strong female characters and it’s diversity and inclusion.
It just feels good to turn our TVs on and see positive images on our screens. They aren’t reduced to mere sidekicks or possible love interests. They are painted as real characters with that supersede the expectations of the male gaze.
The deets: The entire first season is available to watch on Netflix now. It’s voiced by Aimee Carrero as She Ra, and AJ Michalka voices her arch enemy, Catra.
