“The Last Stand, Part 1” (Season 7, Episode 7)
Team Voltron spends the majority of the series light years away from Earth, but when they finally get the chance to go back home, several hurdles stand in their way. Not only that, but they discover the Galra Empire has invaded their home. This is another brilliant flashback episode in which we follow Samuel Holt’s journey back to the Galaxy Garrison. It ultimately sets the stage for the epic fight for Earth.
Sam, who also happens to be Pidge’s father, warns the Garrison about the Galra and how it’s only a matter of time before they descend upon Earth. The military refuses to take any drastic actions or announce the existence of alien life out of fear of starting a panic across the world. In the meantime, Sam creates new defenses for Earth using alien technology and recruits new cadets to be the world’s leading defense team.
Unfortunately, Sam receives news that Voltron has disappeared after the battle with Lotor. This is distressing news, since the Galra are on their way and their defenses are nowhere near where they should be. Sam and his wife go around the military’s authority and inform Earth of the impending attack, no longer wanting to keep the planet’s citizens in the dark. They’re surprised to hear people wanting to help with the efforts, but it’s too late. The Galra arrive and attack Earth.
It’s one of those episodes that feels like a game changer. The Galra are now on Team Voltron’s home turf, and the good guys don’t have the necessary resources to fight back. The characters introduced in this two-part episode also play an important role in the final season, so not only do they triumph, but they continue to move forward together.
