“Razor’s Edge” (Season 6, Episode 2)
Keith’s origins continue to be a crucial part of Voltron, since it’s often tied in with other essential parts of the story. In this case, he discovers more about his past through extraordinary means, while Lance’s feelings toward Allura become more apparent. The episode also leads up to another shocking reveal.
As mentioned before, Keith’s mom is alive and well, but now this brings up a million more questions. What makes this episode work so well is the fact that it’s not a traditional flashback episode, where an action in the present is explained with a moment from the past. Instead, the memories in this episode are triggered by an external source.
Every ripple of space-time lights causes Keith to have visions of his past and future. He learns how his parents met, how they found the Blue Lion, and why Krolia chose to leave her family behind. At the same time, Krolia sees visions from Keith’s past, including what happened to Keith’s father. Not only that, but their mission takes two years to accomplish due to the warped sense of time in the quantum abyss.
After he and Krolia come out of the two-year trip, they find a facility with an Altean who will inevitably change the way Team Voltron view Prince Lotor.
This is also when Lance’s jealousy toward Lotor starts rearing its head. He deeply cares about Allura, but he finds he can’t do anything about it, especially with Lotor at her side. Moments like these help set the stage for the Lance and Allura relationship that blossoms later on in the series.
It’s a brilliant episode in which the story moves along in an interesting way. Several critical things are happening at the same time, but not one detail overshadows the other. Plus, there’s an adorable space-teleporting wolf.
