10 most essential episodes of Voltron: Legendary Defender
“The End is the Beginning” (Season 8, Episode 13)
Like the premiere, this list would not be complete without the final episode of the series. It ties up the major threads, while still taking the audience on one last treacherous trek across time and space. Most importantly, it gives us a final look at the characters once they reach the end of their long and arduous journey.
Voltron and the Atlas combine into one massive defender of the universe in order to cross the multiple realities and track down Honerva and her deadly robot. Infuriated by the fact that she’s not accepted by her husband and son in the universe she had assumed was perfect, Honerva decides to destroy every single reality.
Team Voltron manages to bring her back from the madness and rage that had consumed her. Honerva’s actions have severe consequences, however. In order to restore the realities, Allura works with Honerva to undo and fix the damage she’s done. The two have to forfeit their lives in the process, but not before giving us a tearful goodbye.
The multi-verse is restored, and a statue is made to honor Allura’s sacrifice. The episode ends by giving us a glimpse into what each character sets out to do after the war ends. A post-credits scene shows the Lions of Voltron flying off to unknown parts of the galaxy. Painted in the background is the outline of Allura in the stars.
It makes a remarkable end for a remarkable series. There’s no doubt Voltron had its ups and downs, but it ultimately took us on an out-of-this-world adventure we won’t soon forget.
