On the Come Up – Angie Thomas

Angie Thomas blew readers away with her debut novel, The Hate U Give, which came out during 2017. A political story based off of the Black Lives Matter movement, The Hate U Give was even adapted for the big screen during 2018. Given its success, On the Come Up has a lot to live up to. Thankfully, everything we know about Thomas’ second novel suggests that it will surpass readers’ expectations, just like its predecessor.

In what the synopsis calls Thomas’ “homage to hip-hop,” readers follow 16-year-old Bri as she works to become a successful rapper. And while she hopes to become one of the greats one day, Bri would really be happy just getting out of her neighborhood.

Unfortunately, Bri’s desire to become a successful rapper becomes urgent when her mother loses her job. Her father passed away before his career could really take off, meaning that Bri needs to step up and help—especially when the bills and late-fee notices begin stacking up.

While The Hate U Give covered a movement that has seen a lot of attention over the past few years, On the Come Up tackles social issues that people face every day. It explores what it truly means to be black and poor or working class in America, while also tackling issues like single motherhood and homelessness.

For its social awareness alone, it sounds like On the Come Up will be a hugely important novel. But Bri’s willingness to fight for what she wants also sounds like it will make a compelling story.

One the Come Up will be released Feb. 5.
