Darkdawn – Jay Kristoff

As far as book releases go, Jay Kristoff had a busy year during 2018. He and Amy Kaufman brought The Illuminae Files series to a close with the release of Obsidio, and he released a new science-fiction novel called Lifel1k3. Given that, it’s not surprising that the release date for Darkdawn, the much-anticipated finale to his The Nevernight Chronicle series, was pushed back to 2019.

And while most Nevernight fans are biting their nails in anticipation, there is a bright side to the change in release date: It gives readers one more thing to look forward to next year.

The Nevernight Chronicle begins when Mia Corvere joins a school of assassins, secretly plotting to enact revenge on those who destroyed her family. Though her father was killed, the Red Church welcomes her. It turns out that a guild of assassins doesn’t care much about your family history or the fact that the Senate is after you.

From there, Mia’s quest for vengeance evolves. Though she never loses sight of what she intends to do, she does become wrapped up in other things—from dangerous initiations to selling herself to a gladitorial collegium. And by the end of Godsgrave, she enacts the revenge she’s waited for, leaving the Republic of Itreya in utter chaos.

In Darkdawn, readers will see what becomes of Mia now that she’s done what she set out to do. Not only will she be forced to escape before she’s held responsible for her crimes, but she’ll finally discover her fate—and how much it’s wrapped up in the fate of her world.

Darkdawn will be released on Sept. 3. Hopefully, the finale will give fans a conclusion that was worth waiting for.
