The Red Scrolls of Magic – Cassandra Clare

Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane are two of the most beloved characters from Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter Chronicles, serving as perspective characters during The Mortal Instruments series and making appearances in The Infernal Devices and The Dark Artifices. In the later books, the two are married with two adopted children—a happy ending that, sadly, took place mostly between books.

But in April, the pair is getting their own book, the first in a new series Clare is working on. The Eldest Curses will be Clare’s first writing endeavor to fall into the adult category, and the first novel in the series will be called The Red Scrolls of Magic.

The Red Scrolls of Magic will follow the Shadowhunter and warlock during the time period after the Mortal War, giving fans more insight into what they were up to between The Mortal Instruments and The Dark Artifices. According to the book’s summary, the two attempt to escape the tensions between Shadowhunters and downworlders by traveling the world. Unfortunately, it soon becomes evident that their problems aren’t specific to New York.

Apart from that, the synopsis doesn’t dive deeper into the plot—though it’s safe to assume that readers will get to see how Magnus and Alec wind up married with kids sometime during the course of The Eldest Curses. There’s also a chance that this series might explain some of what occurs during The Dark Artifices, especially given that the two series seem to overlap.

It should be interesting to see how Clare weaves her adult series into the other novels in The Shadowhunter Chronicles. The objects referenced in the book titles for The Eldest Curses are mentioned throughout her other series, and we know she has future series planned in this world as well.

Hopefully, fans will get some answers when The Red Scrolls of Magic is released on April 9.
