The Gilded Wolves – Roshani Chokshi
Roshani Chokshi has become a well-known name in the book community over the past few years, especially with the releases of The Star-Touched Queen and Aru Shah and the End of Time. In 2019, Chokshi is releasing The Gilded Wolves, the first book in a new fantasy series for young adult readers.
The Gilded Wolves opens in Paris during the year 1889. The Exposition Universelle has uncovered ancient secrets, secrets that treasure-hunter Séverin Montagnet-Alarie has a knack for keeping tabs on. That’s why when the powerful Order of Babel asks him to find an ancient artifact, he’s more than capable.
Of course, he’s also motivated by the organization’s promise to deliver him his true inheritance. Determined to see the deed done—and collect his reward—Séverin decides to put together a crew. With the help of “an engineer with a debt to pay, a historian who can’t yet go home, a dancer with a sinister past, and a brother in arms if not blood,” he sets out to find the artifact, which is hidden somewhere in Paris.
When the group does learn more about the artifact, though, they discover some truths they aren’t quite prepared for. What they learn could very well change the world, but they’ll have to survive long enough to do anything with the information—and the synopsis doesn’t make it sound like that will be an easy feat for them.
The Gilded Wolves hits shelves on Jan. 29, and with its unique cast of characters and historical fiction component, it sounds like the perfect story for readers who love characters and settings with complex histories behind them.
