Going Off-Script – Jen Wilde

Jen Wilde’s writing career took off with the release of Queens of Geek in 2017, followed by the publication of The Brightsiders in 2018. It looks like she’ll be releasing another young adult contemporary novel in 2019, and the synopsis Going Off-Script has all the artsy and geeky vibes readers enjoyed during the two previous books.

Going Off-Script tells the story of 17-year-old Bex, who has just landed a production internship allowing her to work on her favorite television show, Silver Falls. Sadly, Bex soon discovers that her time won’t be spent coming up with ideas for the show—or even working on it, really. Instead, it seems the entire purpose of the production interns is to deliver coffee to the actual employees.

In an attempt to prove her chops as a writer, Bex decides to share the script for her own show with the head writer. And though he likes her ideas, he alters her work before attempting to take credit for it. This angers Bex, but not nearly as much as the fact that he rewrites her lesbian character as a straight one. This is what she considers the final straw, and it compels her to fight back against the injustice.

Wilde’s newest story sounds like tons of fun, but it also addresses some important topics—most notably, the treatment of LGBTQ+ characters in the media. Bex’s experience also speaks how interns are treated in modern-day society, something that doesn’t get nearly enough attention.

Going Off-Script is expected to come out on May 21, and it sounds like the perfect breath of fresh air to kick off the summer with.
