9. It Chapter Two

The first It gave us a well told coming-of-age tale, with a number of Stephen King’s classic tropes such as a gang of smart-mouthed children, a small town with a secret, and of course, a horrifying monster. But if you’ve read the novel, or even just seen it, you know what a behemoth it is; at 1138 pages, this was always a story which might benefit from being broken into two parts. Now It Chapter Two 2 will return to our familiar band of kids 27 years later, as they return to the town of Derry for an uneventful class reunion in which nothing bad at all happens.

Just kidding. The clown obviously isn’t as dead as the first movie suggests, and the horror train rolls on.

The first It was well-received by critics and audiences alike, earning 85% approval rating and coming in as the highest-earning horror movie that year. Stephen King adaptations have historically been hit or miss; Carrie became a horror classic in 1976 only to be revived in 2013 to generally positive effect.

Now, along with Pet Sematary, It 2 will continue to test how far the modern line of King horror classics can go. There are already a ton of other novel adaptations in the works, so it seems likely that we’ll have a steady stream of Stephen King movies for the foreseeable future. It would certainly be cool to see a remake of The Shining, though the 1980 version sets the bar high. In the meantime, we get to watch those poor kids go back and get traumatized all over again.
