Klaus and Elijah kill each other –The Originals
What happened: The Originals may have started as a spinoff of the popular supernatural series The Vampire Diaries, but it gained its own fans and place in the pop culture canon. As a way to send the series out with the drama it deserved, creators chose to send the estranged Mikaelson brothers out in a double homicide, where they stake each other and die as the series ends.
Why it’s important: Julie Plec, creator of the show, spoke about it, and declared that it was the only fitting end for these brothers. She compared it to The Notebook, saying “it was only right for them to go out together.”
It was also an emotional way to say farewell to these characters, as they had been doing an emotionally codependent dance for years. In fact, they spent centuries as each others’ main ally and friend, and having one survive the other would undermine their importance to each other.
How to watch it: Ahead of yet another spinoff, Legacies, which is currently airing its first season on The CW, you can watch the entire series on Netflix, culminating in their ultimate death in the series finale.
