Dr. Martens

We’ll continue riding the ’90s grunge nostalgia with this trend — even though Dr. Martens have outfitting people for over 70 years. A German WWII doctor created the footwear in 1947 when he was on leave. However, the first iteration of the 1460 style was sold in the United Kingdom in 1960. This was the year that the soles were trademarked, with the name AirWair.

Dr. Martens have most likely been able to stand the test of time because they are so comfortable, durable, and offer styles for any occasion. I personally own a standard black Dr. Martens boot, which has always been great for going to see live music – especially of the outdoor festival variety. Not only are you walking and standing for hours, but the vegan leather is great at withstanding mud, people stepping on your feet, and beer spills.

Additionally, I wear them through winter, especially when it snows. My Mary Jane style of Dr. Martens have also been best friends through countless hours on my feet in the service industry. The soles really are the most comfortable that I’ve ever worn, and they’re also slip-resistant.

Beyond winter, Dr. Martens will clearly carry you through all of 2019, as some of the runway shows demonstrated. Snow Xue Gao had the most creative styling: fabric laced through Mary Janes. I’m totally copying this when Spring hits! And other designers, such as Monse and Chromat, walked out sandal versions of the popular brand. My absolute favorite way of wearing Dr. Martens boots in particular is with a pretty dress, à la grunge-era Courtney Love. Nothing better than a pretty-meets-edgy juxtaposition. I recently paired my black boots with a midi-length sequin dress. And speaking of sparkly, Dr. Martens just released glittery boots!

If you’re looking for the next cool thing that Dr. Martens is unleashing, they just dropped their collaboration with BAPE. Snag a pair so that you can start 2019 feelin’ fresh. And speaking of collabs…
