5 things we didn’t get to see in the first Hellboy trailer

Fans got to see the first trailer for David Harbour’s Hellboy a day early thanks to a little accident. And while we are excited by what we see, there is more we want.

When it was first announced that David Harbour would be taking on the role of Hellboy in a reboot of the series, there was equal parts excitement and sadness. The sadness comes from the fact that Ron Perlman would no longer be our titular hero (anti-hero?), but excitement over new movies and a fresh take on the material.

And while we have been waiting to see how Harbour would fill Perlman’s shoes, it looks like our wait is finally over. According to ComicBook.com, fans of Hellboy are getting to see the first trailer for the film a day early after an accidental tweet shared the video ahead of schedule.

As fans of the original Hellboy movies, and the comics, we are definitely excited by this trailer. It is a little weird not hearing Perlman’s voice when the character speaks, but at the same time, we can already tell this is going to be a fresh take on the character and his work saving the world (in his own way).

We admit that it only took two viewings of this trailer to be all in on this reboot. While it has been said that this movie is going to be darker than its predecessors, we have to say that what we got from this trailer is more humor (even if the humor is a bit darker and more sarcastic). In fact, we think our new Hellboy may have taken a bit of inspiration from Deadpool, which we are all for.

However, while we are already fans of this reboot and David Harbour, there are still some things we want to see that the trailer did not provide. Watch the trailer below if you haven’t already, or keep scrolling to see what’s on our wishlist.

Confirmation that Abe and Liz are working with Hellboy

In the original movies, Abe Sapien, a psychic merman played by Doug Jones, and Liz Sherman, a pyrokinetic played by Selma Blair, were at Hellboy’s side through all of his missions and adventures. And not only were they an excellent foil for Perlman’s character, but there was even the romantic element that existed. These are things we want to see again, even if they are done in a new and fresh way. But at this point, the trailer has not confirmed these two characters are a part of the reboot.

The feel of the comic books

In the original movies, there was a feel to the films that made you think of the character’s comic book origins. And while the tone of this movie might seem more in line with the comics, we want to see visuals and graphics that give us that same feeling as well. Although we don’t expect this reboot to mimic what Guillermo del Toro gave us, it would still be nice to see a bit more of what made the comics special on-screen.

More about his origins

While there was no way for the trailer to touch upon Hellboy’s origins and how he grew up, that is definitely something we hope to see in the actual movie. This movie doesn’t need to be an origin story, but at least giving us a basis for who the character is (in terms of this new movie and any potential sequels) might be important when it comes to having us rooting for him to be the hero of this story.

More information on the organization he works for

In the trailer, we got a hint of the paranormal organization that Hellboy works with, although we don’t know a lot about it yet. And our hope is that in the movie we learn enough about the group to understand what they do, why Hellboy works with them, and who all works for them. Basically, we want some backstory, without it dragging down the main storyline of the film.

Storylines from the comics

As fans of the original comics, I definitely want to see some storylines from the comics. Even if the story is not true to the source material or even builds off of what was in the comics, I would love to see more of the characters and situations that Hellboy had to deal with in the pages of his story. This includes his hunt for the truth of why he exists and even the story of his connection to the mythical King Arthur.

Honestly, there are plenty of things we would love to see in this reboot, and while the trailer gives us hope that this take really will be fresh and new, we can’t help but want to see some callbacks to either the original movies or the comics themselves. For now, we will just have to watch the trailer on repeat until we get even more teasers and information.
