Schitt’s Creek

Series availability: 4 seasons, 51 episodes
Watch now on Netflix.

Schitt’s Creek is still criminally underrated, so this is a PSA from myself to you saying that you should definitely check it out. This show is a Canadian export (a CBC-Netflix collaboration, to be specific) starring Eugene Levy, his son Dan Levy, and the amazing Catherine O’Hara. While the show started out in Canada, it’s now on Netflix around the world as well as on POP in the US.

Schitt’s Creek tells the story of the Roses, an affluent family who loses their entire fortune and have to move to the small town of Schitt’s Creek, because patriarch Johnny once bought the town as a joke for his son’s birthday, and it’s the only asset he’s allowed to keep when everything else was repossessed. You can only imagine how this rich family fares in a small town filled with colorful characters, living in a small, dingy motel with no money, no skincare, and no more expensive clothes.

This show is still relatively new, so I’ll spare any major spoilers, but I think you can figure out exactly where this one is headed. Johnny tries to use his business mind to land on his feet, even though Schitt’s Creek has pretty much nothing other than a diner and the motel. Moira refuses to believe she’s living with lesser folk, so she keeps up her eccentric charade with wigs and elaborate outfits, and we love her for it. Alexis and David, their kids, are the most surprising and even though it’s a huge adjustment for them, they manage to carve out a life for themselves there.

Season 5 of the comedy starts in January on CBC, and a holiday special just aired, so now is the perfect time to start binging!
