Black-ish

Not everyone gets to spend the holidays with their family, but thankfully, a lot of the shows on this list have featured some great ones for you to join. While you binge your life away, you can be a part of the Dunphys, the Belchers, the Roses, and last but not least, the Johnsons. Black-ish is all about family, and the complicated balancing act of being black in a white-dominated upper class society.

Black-ish follows the Johnson family, led by Dre, an advertising exec, and his wife, Dr. Rainbow Johnson. They have four children (with a fifth addition coming later in the series): Zoey, Junior, and the twins Jack and Diane. Obviously with a dad in advertising and a mother who’s a doctor, they’re definitely comfortable money-wise, but Dre is determined to make sure they don’t grow up too spoiled. They definitely make it hard for their dad.

Without a doubt, Black-ish is hilarious and the entire cast gives a great performance (especially Jack and Diane, to be honest), but they also deal with a lot of important issues. They’ve had episodes focused on the use of the N-word, gun violence, and the struggles of LGBTQ people in the African American community (when we’re introduced to Dre’s younger sister Rhonda, played by Raven-Symoné).

If you burned through all the seasons of Black-ish a little too quickly and you still want more, you can also check out Grown-ish on Hulu. The spinoff follows Zoey to college where she starts learning about the joys of sex, drugs, and pulling all-nighters. You’ll get to know and love a whole new crop of characters as Zoey navigates her new life, but there’s only one season, so pace yourself.
