There’s someone for everyone to love (and relate to)

We’ve extolled the universality of virtues of Star Wars already, but let us just add this: there is genuinely something for everyone to enjoy, including characters.

We’ve got them all. Princess Leia is a bona fide rock star. She’s an icon for everyone to look up to, but girls especially have a role model in this space bun-wearing rebel fighting machine.

Luke Skywalker is a farm boy turned Jedi, an example of how people who seem the most unlikely can make a huge difference if they just try their best and do what’s right. He is also a lesson in confidence. We’ve already discussed how Han is a hero to all, but it bears repeating, since he is Han Solo after all.

The new episodes have also brought with them more a diverse cast, making it far easier for every Star Wars fan to see themselves represented onscreen.

Kelly Marie Tran in The Last Jedi is the first woman of color to be cast in a leading role, as she plays Rose Tico, a Resistance maintenance worker and all-round angel. John Boyega is likewise a welcome addition to the franchise as ex-Stormtrooper Finn, and Daisy Ridley’s Rey is a worthy successor to Leia, storming down the footpath that Carrie Fisher laid out before her.

So that’s all great. But then there’s the little droids too. We don’t know anyone who doesn’t laugh at little BB-8’s thumbs up in The Force Awakens or isn’t charmed when he’s given a little belly-rub by Poe in The Last Jedi. R2-D2 is always a firm favorite, and nervous nellies everywhere are given a mascot in C-3PO.

It doesn’t matter who you like best, or what characters you respond to most, because Star Wars has given us a lot to work with, from angry project managers to thankless workers in Starkiller Base’s sanitation department. There’s someone for everyone.

You get a favorite character! And you get a favorite character! Everyone gets a character!
