15 reasons why Star Wars is a perfect family holiday movie

Just because

With any luck, this time next year, hopefully we will have a brand spanking new Star Wars film to go and see at the cinema. But for now let me say, without hope or agenda, just because it’s Christmas (and at Christmas you tell the truth): to me, Star Wars is perfect.

We might not have the placards to say it to Lucasfilm’s face while standing at the doorway playing carols, but it’s still true. For many of us, Star Wars is a great love, one that has lasted longer than some (most?) relationships.

And okay, perhaps perfect is a strong word, given the existence of the prequels, but you know, we could argue that the unintentional humor of the prequels gives them cult status. Where would we be without the prequel memes (we heart the higher ground)?

Nonetheless, Star Wars has a very special place in our hearts. It is a joy to watch and to feel part of the Skywalker saga, whether we are reliving our childhoods or discovering the films anew. Star Wars is groundbreaking (in special effects and its aforementioned genre-bending tendencies), fun, heartening, gripping and basically all of the things.

It is a beloved series, which has stood the test of time even without the recent Disney-led resurgence. There is a reason it has continued to be watched and loved, and that parents have handed down the joy of Star Wars to their children. And if you can’t watch a movie that you love at Christmas, when can you?

Forgive us for paraphrasing Love Actually once again, but simply put: my wasted heart will love Star Wars forever.
