Itâs not aggressively Christmas
Maybe youâve found all our previous arguments a bit of a reach. We get that. Star Wars isnât necessarily your go-to holiday movie, and thatâs why weâre here. But thereâs something it has that other holiday movies donât have and that isâŚa complete lack of anything Christmas.
Thatâs right: no lights, no wreaths, no Santa (Obi-Wan does have a beard, but thereâs not a bowl full of jelly in sight).
The festive season isnât for everyone. You might not even celebrate it. It can also be a hard time for various reasons, and the pressure for it to be joyous can sometimes achieve exactly the opposite. As Veronica in the film Heathers opines, âIf you were happy every day of your life, you wouldnât be a human. Youâd be a gameshow host.â
And even if you like all the trappings of the holidays, it can still be a pretty relentless time of year. It seems to start earlier every year (complaints about that arriving not long after), and once you hear that first festive song in a store, thatâs it, itâs a race to the finish line (the finish line being the turkey or simply the day after: you decide).
Star Wars is a series that provides escapism at the best of times, but itâs unashamed lack of festivity can be a relief for those who are finding the holiday season just a bit much.
Had enough of Love Actually for one year? Maybe The Princess Switch has been on for the sixth time in a week, and frankly, you might be relating a little too much to the Grinch this year. The solution: stick to Star Wars.
The galaxy couldnât be further away from the sugared worlds of carol singers and candy canes, and you know what? Thereâs nothing wrong with that.
