Into the Spider-Verse filmmakers share new characters they’d want in the sequel
A Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel will be coming, and the producers have some thoughts about which characters they’d like to adapt.
People are loving Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and it’s getting great reviews. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s casually hanging out at 97 percent. Audiences are praising Spider-Verse‘s animation style plus how the film shows diversity.
The movie also opens up an entire world that exists in the comics, featuring different Spidey pals. In Into the Spider-Verse, many fans are introduced to characters like Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, and Spider-Man Noir! for the first time.
If you loved this movie, you’ll be happy to know a sequel is definitely on the way. Cinema Blend sat down with the two producers of the film, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and asked what new characters they would most like to bring to the big screen the next time around.
Lord and Miller express that while their wishes aren’t necessarily a promise of what will happen in the sequel, they say they’re interested in doing something with characters such as Silk, Peter Parker’s classmate who’s also bitten by a radioactive spider, and Spider-Punk, who is an alternate reality revolutionary rocker. They also mention the option to bring in obscure but culturally focused Spidey pals, such as Japanese and Italian Spider-Man.
Now, if you’ve never read comics book before and don’t know anything about these characters, that’s all right. The producers of Into the Spider-Verse mention they want this movie and any that come after it to be for comic book fans and new fans alike.
As Chris Miller says in the interview, “What’s cool about the movie is that if you are into that sort of stuff, the deep comic-book canon, it’s awesome. But even if you have no understanding of what comic books are, and you’ve never opened a page of one, these movies are still for you, too.”
We love the idea of telling more stories about different Spider-People. Thanks to Into the Spider-Verse‘s set up of multiple universes, this film series has the perfect setup to tell a vast array of stories for different genders, races, backgrounds and more. Don’t get us wrong — we love Peter Parker’s tale, for sure — but we’re also here for the ever-expanding Spider-Verse.
