Ocean’s 8
Ocean’s 8 was a prime example of a movie jumped differently by male critics versus female critics. In fact, the discrepancy was enough to compel Rotten Tomatoes to try to seek a balance between the genders of their affiliated critics.
In a movie similar to the Ghostbusters reboot in 2016, Ocean’s 8 was a continuation of the Ocean’s series with Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) trying to pull of a heist in the spirit of her deceased brother, Danny (George Clooney). Gathering together a group of some of the greatest actresses around (Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, and Helena Bonham Carter to name a few), Debbie plans to rob the glamorous Met Gala.
Everything about Ocean’s 8 is breathtaking, from the drop-dead gorgeous gowns to the diamonds dripping on everyone. This is a film that embraces femininity but also doesn’t forget that women like some action in their lives.
Blanchett left everyone with a massive girl crush — until Rachel Weisz showed up in The Favourite — while other actresses like Anne Hathaway got to play outside their comfort zone. Actually, to Hathaway’s credit, she plays on a lot of the unfounded rumors about her. If you enjoyed the other Ocean’s movies, there’s no reason you shouldn’t love this…unless you’re a jerk.
