What we can expect from Thor based on the Avengers: Endgame trailer

Thor fans might be feeling left out with the hero clocking in very little screen time in the Avengers: Endgame trailer. But the shot still speaks volumes about his journey so far.

The stars of the Avengers: Endgame trailer are clear. The first half of the trailer is entirely dedicated to showing just how screwed Tony Stark is up in space. The other portion of the trailer seems to highlight the star-spangled man who only has one plan, Captain America. And for a movie so loaded with characters (ok, maybe with 50 percent fewer characters thanks to Thanos), that means not everybody gets equal screen time in the trailer.

Fans saw that with the brief glimpses of Nebula, Bruce Banner and, surprisingly, Thor. In his one second of fame, we see Thor grimly sitting — head hung low in shame, fear, shock, or all of the above. And lest we forget about his terribly depressing Midgardian clothing: sweatpants and a hoodie. The type of clothes you either wear to a rap battle, or when you don’t have the will to end your lazy Netflix marathon that lasted all weekend.

Yes, Thor has been put through the wringer. And the Endgame trailer seems to be setting the tone for what we can expect to see from his character throughout the movie.

Avengers: Infinity War opened and closed with poignant Thor moments that go along with setting that tone. The movie begins with destruction and devastation from his perspective right off that bat. The Asgardians are in complete dismay following Thanos’ attack on their ship, he witnesses the death of Asgard’s brave gatekeeper, and then witnesses the death of his brother (again). In the movie, Thor (whose emotions are barely holding on by a string) recounts how much he’s lost to Rocket — and that includes his parents, his best friends, and his entire home. Yikes.

By the end, just when you think he’s found his redemption and a happy ending, he makes the fatal mistake of striking Thanos in the wrong spot. Who’s to say Thor is the person to blame for Thanos carrying out the snap, but that decision is a heavy burden to carry none the less.

Now, in Avengers: Endgame, it looks like Thor will have to deal with those consequences. How he’ll be able to move on is not certain. But it may take time for him or other Avengers to get back on their feet before finding the motivation to get things right. Captain America seems to have that motivation, and the stern Black Widow also seems like she’s okay with moving forward. Scott Lang, as happy as he was in the trailer, even looks like he might be ready to join the fight.

Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t show us how willing Thor is to get back up and dust himself off (please, no pun intended). Luckily, we’ve gotten to know Thor through several movies, and we know he has a strong will to persevere and push on. He didn’t give up when his father banished him from Asgard. He didn’t give up when his sister obliviated his beloved hammer. And he didn’t give up even when he the took the full impact of a burning star.

Thor is strong physically, mentally, and emotionally. And though this latest trauma might have hit him the hardest, it doesn’t mean he’ll be backing down anytime soon.
