Roseanne -“White Trash Christmas”
Speaking of family drama, why not take a look at one of TV’s earlier dysfunctional families, the Conners! Before Roseanne started spewing hate and got killed off her own show in 2018, Roseanne was one of the most beloved shows on television. The Conners were a family that regular blue collar Americans could relate to, and that means Christmas was definitely interesting in their house, just like most families!
On this season 6 episode, Dan and Roseanne get a notice from their neighborhood association about the Christmas decorations they’re allowed to put out. The neighborhood association wants them to only put up simple white lights and no old, falling apart, faded Santas or reindeer, because they’re eyesores. That’s when the Conners get a great idea. They decide to go all out for their “white trash” Christmas decorations to make the neighborhood regret saying anything!
They decorate the house with a Gumby statue, two baby Jesuses in two mangers, a giant flashing neon bar sign that says “Feliz Navidad” (and also “Wednesday is Ladies Nite All Drinks Half Price”), vulgar Santas, garlands, a beer can wreath, multicolored lights, and plenty of other ugly, mismatched holiday decorations. When they turn everything on, the light is bright enough to be seen from space. Maybe they put a little more than just simple white lights, oh well!
While this is all happening, Dan and Roseanne are having another problem. They surprise Becky with a check to pay for her first semester of community college, and she’s grateful, but then her and her husband Mark decide to use it to send him to school instead, and Becky gets a job at a Hooters-esque resto-bar named Bunz. Her parents can’t believe she would make such a stupid decision and sell her dignity at a dead-end job instead of taking the opportunity to better her future.
There’s a lot of back and forth and threats to take the check back unless Becky uses it for her schooling or quits the job at Bunz. Finally, Roseanne appreciates the fact that Becky is trying to be a responsible adult by caring for her husband, and she lets them keep the money. It’s a Christmas miracle!
