Community – “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas”

Last but certainly not least is Community’s season 2 episode, “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas,” which is told entirely through stop motion animation, just like the classic holiday specials we’ve already discussed on this list.

When Dean Pelton announces to students that all of the school’s upcoming holiday celebrations have to be non-denominational, Abed is disappointed. Pierce doesn’t get why Abed even cares about Christmas celebrations, since he’s Muslim, but Abed defends himself, saying that despite his religion, he still always loved Christmas and says that this year should be extra special because they are all stop motion animated. Everyone is (rightfully) confused by the statement, until Abed bursts into song in the parking lot, in full stop motion animation (and eventually gets tased by campus security).

Abed is being told to seek help for his psychological problems or else he’ll be expelled, but instead he decides to discover the true meaning of Christmas. The study group stage an intervention for him, and Duncan even plays along with his delusion and pretends to be The Christmas Wizard to calm Abed down and teach him about the true meaning of Christmas. Abed imagines the study room is his own Winter Wonderland, and all of his classmates have transformed into cartoon versions of themselves on a journey to the North Pole.

After a long and complicated journey through the North Pole, encountering strange characters and sharing stories about Christmases past, Abed is fully recovered and finally knows the true meaning of Christmas: it can mean whatever you want it to. On his journey, Abed realized Christmas meant being with his mother, but now he can keep up the tradition by being with his study group.

The gang decorate Abed’s dorm room and keep up the annual tradition he had with his mom by watching Christmas cartoons together, which is what Christmas is really all about. This was a wild ride from start to finish, but Community managed to give it a little bit of heart and ultimately make the ending a very sweet Christmas message for everyone to cherish.
