Arrested Development – “Afternoon Delight”

There have been a lot of dysfunctional families on this list, but none take the cake quite like the Bluth family. On the season 2 episode “Afternoon Delight”, it’s time for some Bluth family traditions, but not everyone seems to care about them as much as Michael does.

When the family’s frozen banana stand gets vandalized — a local holiday tradition — Michael enlists his son’s help to rebuild it, a holiday tradition of their own. Unfortunately, George Michael is too busy to help his dad, and he also won’t be attending the family’s annual Christmas party. He decided to attend his girlfriend Ann’s family Christmas party instead.

George Michael may have decided not to attend their family’s event, but Maeby is straight-up told by her mother Lindsay not to attend, because she wants to find a man at the party. Maeby finds Michael and the two rebuild the banana stand together and vow to spend more time together, so sh attends the Christmas party with her uncle anyway, because when does she listen to her parents? G.O.B. thinks he’s going to be praised by their employees at the Christmas party, even though they actually hate him for boasting about his lavish lifestyle.

To really show everyone how much they’ve bonded, Michael and Maeby decide to sing karaoke together and don’t realize just how sexual the song “Afternoon Delight” is until they’re halfway through performing it in front of a horrified crowd of guests. G.O.B. takes this opportunity to get an employee to roast him, because he thinks it’ll be fun, but when he doesn’t like what he hears (and the entire staff laughs a little too hard), he fires all of them.

The Christmas party is a complete disaster, just like everything else the Bluths try to do, and it just keeps getting worse. Lindsay and George Michael decide to make Michael and Maeby jealous by also performing “Afternoon Delight,” before they too realize how sexual it is. Lucille, high on a strain of weed called “Afternoon Deelite” (thanks to Michael, an honest mistake) crashes into the banana stand, then Buster uses a construction crane to pull G.O.B out of the banana stand and drops him into the ocean, making everyone laugh even more.

I’m exhausted just talking about how wild this party was! Nobody does Christmas quite like the Bluths!
