Game of Thrones season 8: No, Maisie Williams didn’t get to keep Needle
On the one hand, it seems sad that Maisie Williams didn’t get to keep Needle from Game of Thrones. On the other, we can see why it wouldn’t happen.
With a show as big as Game of Thrones, it’s easy to see how cast members would want to take some physical mementos away from the set after filming wrapped up earlier this year. Plenty of cast members have talked about how large the show looms in their lives after so much time spent working on it, after all.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean that these stars can always get what they want. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, David Benioff has Needle at his house, and Maisie Williams wants it. This may be the most ridiculous piece of Game of Thrones news we’ve heard in a while, and we cover spoilers and rumors regularly.
After all, it’s well-known that Game of Thrones sets are going to become actual sites for tourism in Northern Ireland. Why not also have some of those iconic props on display, from Needle to Longclaw and beyond? Even if there are multiple Needle props, it only seems fitting that one should go to the actress who wielded the blade, not just end up at the home of one of the show’s creators and main writers.
Ultimately, it’s just a little funky that all Williams apparently has is a jacket she wore as part of her costume, again per EW. It’s hard to draw the line between what someone can retain and what someone can’t from a job like this. Keeping the prop in order to display it makes some sort of sense. What has actually happened just doesn’t click in the same way.
But who knows? Now that Williams has publicized what she’d like from the set and where it is, she may quietly get another Needle. Perhaps it’ll end up being a gift she receives at the inevitable season 8 premiere event. Then again, that might not happen either, since everything is worded as if there is only one true Needle in the real world, not just in the fictional world of Westero.
We’re holding out hope that the woman who’s spent years bringing Arya to life gets to keep perhaps her most iconic item.
