Fans mourn Captain America’s beard, but the decision makes sense

While many of us are going to miss the bearded Steve Rogers look, the clean-shaven return marks a lot of sense story wise.

Amongst all of the serious angst of the Avengers: Endgame trailer, fans are also mourning something that is a lot less intense.

We all know that fans lost their minds when Steve Rogers look for Avengers: Infinity War was revealed and we saw him sporting a scruffy beard. Many people agree that the bearded Steve Rogers look was his hottest and best. But, as we’ve learned in the MCU, good things never last too long.

In Avengers: Endgame, Captain America is clean-shaven once again, although he doesn’t look nearly as fresh-faced or naive as he did in earlier movies. He still has longer hair than normal, but the beard is all gone to the dismay of scruffy Steve Rogers fans.

While we totally get where they are coming from, and we are also really going to miss that look, getting rid of the beard makes sense from a character and story perspective.

In Infinity War, Steve was on the run from the law. He was a fugitive and was clearly trying to distance himself from his Captain America title and from the Avengers following the events of Civil War. That beard in many ways signified his aloofness from being a hero, and possibly letting himself go as he dipped into a darker, more depressed state. (And when we say “let himself go” — we mainly mean by growing his hair out, because we all know Cap wouldn’t lose any of that heroic physique.)

In the Avengers: Endgame trailer, we see Steve Rogers in his most devastated state yet. As tears roll down his cheeks, he looks more desperate than ever to reverse the effects of Thanos’ snap (now officially known as The Decimation). He might be in the worst place we’ve ever seen him, so why no more depression beard?

Well, it makes a lot of sense for the type of character Steve Rogers is that he would shave the beard. He has to step up to the plate once again and take on the mantle of leader (especially if Tony and Steve don’t reunite for a while and the Avengers on Earth don’t know what happened to him). Though he is clearly grieving and suffering so many personal losses, such as Bucky AGAIN, Steve has to rally. He’s the type of character who will do what needs to be done to save other people.

While he seems to be wallowing a bit in Infinity War, Steve’s back at it again with Black Widow and a sight for sore eyes, Falcon. Even if he is personally lower than ever before, Steve needs to be Captain America again and that means being more put together and clean shaved.

Personally, I feel the decision makes sense for the type of self-sacrificing character Steve is. Also, it visually brings the audience back to earlier moments in the Captain America arc, and combined with the return of the stealth suit also makes sense as a visual character design.

So as much as we all loved that scruffy Steve Rogers persona, it’s time for Captain America to shine bright again with his fellow Avengers and kick some Thanos butt.

Also. Captain Marvel could save Tony and Nebula. light
