Supernatural: Should the show bring back Lucifer?
By Evie Taylor
After the reveal that Lucifer is awake in the afterlife during last week’s episode, we might soon be getting a resurrection, but how do we feel about that?
Lucifer has been arguably the biggest and meanest villain throughout Supernatural’s 14 year run. The character has featured in five seasons, has been to Hell and back, and fathered a son, all whilst making Sam and Dean’s lives that little bit more difficult. Lucifer has also proved a valuable ally at times, most notably when the Winchesters joined forces with him in season 11 to defeat The Darkness. Despite being successfully menacing and powerful, Lucifer was dramatically killed off during last season’s finale episode by the Archangel Michael who was possessing Dean’s body, and has shown no hint of returning since.
However, last week’s episode followed the journey of Nick, who acted as Lucifer’s vessel for over 9 years before he was freed last season, as he continues to investigate who was responsible for the death of his wife and baby. Nick goes through some struggles as he is overcome with a desire to kill, slaughtering two people, almost addicted to the sensation and power. Nick also feels great remorse and guilt for the terrible crimes he commits, and he’s clearly battling with himself and his own humanity. This all comes to a climax at the end of the episode when Nick gets drunk after killing a man and starts praying to Lucifer. Nick wishes for Lucifer to return and possess him again so that all his humanity and guilt for the things he has done can be taken away.
Upon praying and asking for Lucifer to return, Nick manages to awaken Lucifer in The Empty, a cosmic blank space where angels and demons slumber for all eternity when they die. If Lucifer is awake in the afterlife, this might mean that he might find a way to return to the land of the living, possessing Nick again in the process. Although Lucifer is a quirky fan-favorite character who has massive impact on the show, should the writers go this route and resurrect Lucifer?
I’m sure, after seeing Lucifer being stabbed in the heart by an Archangel blade, most of us believed he was gone for good, but then again, Castiel has been to The Empty and returned. In terms of the current storyline on the show, Sam and Dean need all the help they can get to defeat Michael, still having absolutely no idea where he is or what he is planning, so if Lucifer was to return, he might ally with the boys again and help take down Michael. Lucifer might also be the key to saving Jack, who is fatally ill, or to regenerating Heaven as it now has only a few angels left keeping it running. Being the biggest big bad of all time, some of you might be thrilled to have him back.
However, after the giant climax of last season, which involved Dean allowing Michael to possess him in order to defeat Lucifer, will Lucifer’s return ruin the incredibly satisfying season 13 finale? Plus, Sam and Dean have enough problems dealing with Michael so throwing Lucifer in as another enemy as well might be messy and complicated. Michael has had his battle with Lucifer and won – a return might degrade the massive fight the two Archangels had last season. Dean also sacrificed his own body so that Michael could kill Lucifer, which resulted in Dean going missing for weeks during the beginning of this season.
With all that work and build up to finally conquer Lucifer, bringing him back so soon might seem like a cop out. Personally, I feel like the writers should develop new villains for the boys to go up against so that the story remains fresh and exciting.
