What is your favorite holiday movie? That special, annual nostalgic tradition could be the inspiration for your next holiday vacation.

A favorite holiday movie holds a special place in many people’s hearts. From a heartwarming moment that everyone understands to the always debatable label of Die Hard being a Christmas movie, holiday movies are part of the annual traditions. For many people looking to capture that special holiday moment of their own, those favorite holiday movies could inspire a holiday vacation.

When it comes to holiday vacations, the ideas are many. For some people, a luxurious getaway to a warm, sandy beach offers the perfect respite from the blistering cold. Other people prefer snowy slopes and wintery adventures. While many people find their travel inspiration based on activities, some people prefer to be inspired by their favorite holiday memories, like holiday movies.

Everyone seems to have a favorite holiday movie. It could be that movie, like Frosty the Snowman, which offers a timeless peak into the spirit of the holidays. Or, maybe it is a perennial classic like It’s a Wonderful Life that has been part of holiday traditions for decades. Better yet, it could be Christmas Vacation, which makes everyone feel a little less dysfunctional.

With these holiday movies holding such a special place in people’s collective memories, the locales featured in many of these movies could be the inspiration for your holiday vacation. Although traveling to the actual North Pole in search of Santa might be a little unrealistic a few places could be holiday perfection.

New York City

One of the most obvious holiday vacation locales would be New York City. In numerous holiday movies, New York City has served as a backdrop to sweeping storylines. From skating at Rockefeller Plaza to shopping at Macy’s, the Big Apple is always festive during the holidays.

If you are looking to plan a wintery vacation to New York City, make a smart plan to tackle all those must-see locations. New York City is easy to travel by subway, taxi or even walking. Still, you don’t want to walk in circles all day long.

A few favorite places to stop for the holidays are the Christmas tree and ice skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza, Radio City Musical Hall (home to the infamous Rockettes), Macy’s at Harold’s Square and the Empire State Building.

Beyond these famous locations, a few other stops might be a little off your radar. To warm up from the winter chill, stop and have tea at the Plaza Hotel. You might remember this location from Home Alone 2. Plus, a real afternoon tea service is definitely a holiday luxury.

For an indulgent treat (and maybe a little less stuffy), visit Serendipity 3 for its iconic frozen hot chocolate. This New York favorite has been featured in numerous movies. Although you might not want to eat the same amount of sugary treats as Buddy the Elf, you will find plenty to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Throughout New York City, there are numerous locales that have been featured in favorite holiday movies. But, the Big Apple isn’t the only place that can inspire a holiday vacation.

Cleaveland, Ohio

While not an instant hit when originally released, A Christmas Story has become a holiday legend. Hopefully people have learned their lessons about tongues on frozen poles and the reality of BB-guns, but let it be known: the original Christmas Story house is a real place.

Located in Cleveland, Ohio, the real house is a museum, complete with the infamous leg lamp. Actually, people can even “rent” the house for an overnight stay. It feels as if you have stepped directly into the movie set. Just, don’t leave the turkey on the table for the dogs to devour.

London, England

If your travel budget is a little larger, a trip to London could be a wonderful holiday-inspired vacation. Although there isn’t a full recreation of Hogwarts Castle outside of London, a few other places reflect some favorite holiday movies.

For example, do you remember the wedding of Juliet and Peter in Love Actually? That location is an actual chapel in Mayfair (a neighborhood of London). The Grosvenor Chapel was established in 1730 and is still a working chapel today. If you break out into song, just make sure that a service isn’t interrupted.

Numerous other London locations were featured in this movie. From walking on the river Thames to shopping around the city, there are many ways to re-create scenes from this favorite movie.

Los Angeles

Since Die Hard is now considered a holiday movie, that actual building should get mentioned in this holiday movie inspired travel list. Located in Los Angeles, the real-life Fox Plaza is the visual for the Nakatomi Plaza in the movie. While no one will be able to recreate that daring rescue, everyone can drive by the location.
