Ross Marquand talks Avengers 4: Here’s how Red Skull could come back
By Mia Johnson
After a surprise appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, Red Skull actor Ross Marquand has been pressed to know if Red Skull will return. If he does, here’s how that could happen.
As we’re all learning with Marvel these days, never, ever assume that one of their many actors won’t appear in Avengers 4. It’s going to be one big potpourri of MCU actors — or perhaps even think of it as a farewell tour for the characters who’ll have their last moments on screen as this chapter of the MCU comes to a close.
That could include Red Skull, or rather his Infinity War actor Ross Marquand. It was a surprise to us all when Red Skull appeared in Infinity War in the first place, showing up as a guardian on Vormir where the Soul Stone was kept. And now that the cat’s out of the bag that Marquand has taken over Red Skull from Hugo Weaving (who originally played the character in Captain America: The First Avenger), fans are curious to know if he’ll be back again. Playing Red Skull can’t be a one-time thing… well, unless you’re Hugo Weaving.
Marquand was asked about his potential to return during Sunday’s episode of The Talking Dead (as the actor also plays Aaron on AMC’s zombie series The Walking Dead.) And, as we’re all learning with Marvel these days, actors can’t say a lot about what they’re doing or even what they’ve already done. So of course, his answer was something we should have seen coming.
"I don’t know. I can’t answer that question. I really don’t know."
Once again, we’re back to the part where Marvel actors can neither confirm nor deny their involvement. Nonetheless, it’s completely plausible that Red Skull could come back up in the movie, most definitely if it has to deal with the Soul Stone.
It would be most impressive if Red Skull were to come face to noseless face with Captain America once again, just to see the shock on his face to know that the foe is still alive. As rumors go, the Avengers will be searching for the Infinity Stones to create a gauntlet of their own to ultimately reverse the damage that Thanos has done. And if that’s true, then they’ll likely have to come across Red Skull on Vormir in order to have the Soul Stone for themselves. Unfortunately, that means a sacrifice will have to be made to get stone, and we all know how well that works out.
On the other hand, Red Skull might appear to Thanos again. Maybe Thanos won’t have to return to Vormir to see him; perhaps Red Skull, knowing much about the Soul Stone, will appear to Thanos as a Charles Dickens-esque ghost to warn him about the perils occurring because of his careless actions. There’s no way Thanos can be 100 percent satisfied with the work that’s he done, especially since he had to give up Gamora. So there’s likely something eating away at his conscious that’ll affect how he acts in this movie.
At the same time, Marquand could be completely honest in his response, not knowing if Red Skull will appear in the next movie or not. With Infinity War and Avengers 4 being shot back to back, in addition to the multiple fakes scripts that went around, it’s easy to see that these actors honestly may be none the wiser. And if that is the case, then having a few surprises in Avengers 4 will be just fine. That’s what made Infinity War so great to begin with.
