Everyday Is Christmas – Sia

Let’s start with one of my personal favorites! You never know what you’re going to get with Sia. She’s been hiding behind eccentric hats and wigs for years, with her mini-me Maddie Ziegler out front and center. She has made a brand for herself off of always surprising us with the unexpected, and that’s exactly what she did with her 2017 holiday album Everyday Is Christmas.

You would never expect an artist like Sia, the talented songwriter and visionary, to release something like a holiday album, for whatever reason that may be. Maybe we see it as a money-grab, or maybe it just doesn’t seem like an “artistic” expression of musical talent, but for whatever reason, Sia just didn’t seem like the Christmas music type… but she proved us all wrong with Everyday Is Christmas.

The Australian songstress couldn’t release just any old holiday album filled with covers and standards. Instead, Everyday Is Christmas is filled with originals penned by Sia and Greg Kurstin, making it just as unique as everything else Sia does. The songs, like lead single “Santa’s Coming For Us” and “Ho Ho Ho”, feel festive and cheery, but are still quintessentially Sia. Some explore themes not as common in holiday songs, like “Puppies Are Forever” which encourages people to think twice about buying puppies as pets if they’re not going to cherish them for life.

A deluxe edition of Everyday Is Christma was released in November 2018 with three extra songs: “Round and Round”, “Sing For My Life”, and “My Old Santa Claus”. The best thing about this album is that most of the songs feel like fully rounded pieces of music, like they could be released as singles not just around the holiday season. Not many holiday albums accomplish that, but if anyone could do it, it would be Sia!
