Ryan Reynolds and Fred Savage introduce Once Upon a Deadpool in new trailer

Deadpool 2 is making a strange return to the screen in time for Christmas. This time in a recut version that’s rated PG-13.

Ryan Reynolds will be returning to his role as Deadpool for Once Upon a Deadpool. While at first, it might seem like Once Upon a Deadpool is an entirely new movie or special, it is actually a recut version of Deadpool 2. Yet instead of it having its naughty R rating, the film will cut out the most adult parts to get a PG-13 rating — just in time to take the entire family to the movies for the holidays!

In the trailer for the special, which will likely include some new scenes at least, we see Deadpool reading a delightful Christmas poem to none other than… Fred Savage.

Fred plays a very meta-role as a spin-off of his iconic character in The Princess Bride in the trailer. But instead of a loving gramps reading him a tale about Buttercup and Wesley, our boy Fred has been kidnapped and duct taped to bed.

His presence is meant to give the movie a take that is “filtered through the prism of child-like innocence.” Also, he’s definitely there for nostalgia, meta-commentary, and the type of humor you would expect from Deadpool.

While much of the movie will likely be similar to the original cut of Deadpool 2 that was released this summer, fans can expect at least a couple of new scenes.

One of the best moments of the trailer was when Savage took a jab at the Fox division of Marvel movies. Savage says that he prefers Marvel movies to which Deadpool insists that this is a Marvel movie, and Savage claps back saying, “You’re Marvel licensed by Fox. It’s like if the Beatles were produced by Nickelback: it’s music, but it sucks.”

It wouldn’t be a Deadpool movie (or trailer) without these kind of break the fourth wall moments, now would it?
