Minerva McGonagall is not old enough to be a professor in Fantastic Beasts

Fantastic Beasts what are you doing? Minerva McGonagall may be a seasoned pro at dealing with children at Hogwarts but she’s not old enough to have worked in the 1920s.

Minerva McGonagall deserves better, Jo! Or at least for you to remember her age. In the 1950s, Minerva began working at Hogwarts. So why is she at Hogwarts in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald?

To be honest, I’m not sure if Dumbledore calls her “Minerva” or just McGonagall so maybe she is a relative of the McGonagall we know and love from Harry’s time at Hogwarts. But if she is meant to be the Minerva with the stern brow who loved Harry Potter and his friends, even if they made her want to pull her hair out, then I have some questions.

It isn’t a matter of McGonagall being older. That’s fine. What it is a matter of is continuity. Yet again, the Fantastic Beasts series is throwing a wrench in a series we know and love in a way that is challenging what has already been established. Why did McGonagall say she started working at Hogwarts in the 1950s if that isn’t true?

You’re insinuating that Minerva has been there since the 1910s, at least, and is still telling children off in the 90s? To be quite honest, it’s just lazy. It was a cheap grab that didn’t need to be made. We were seeing a young Dumbledore at Hogwarts. Here’s the thing though: He should have been teaching her class.

The movie never fixes that Dumbledore was the Transfiguration teacher and McGongall is already there so they just took what was pre-established, rolled it into a ball, and threw it out the window like it doesn’t matter.
