The Charmed sisters dealt with their own personal demons on Sunday night’s episode. Mel can’t get Niko out of her head and Maggie is haunted by a ghost.

There were loads to digest in the new episode of Charmed titled “Kappa Spirit,” which aired Sunday night. Each sister struggled with their own issues. However, oldest sister, Macy, has been pushed to the spotlight after a mysterious reveal could indicate something dark about her past.

The main monster of the week haunting this episode was a former Kappa member who tragically died in the 1980s after she got drunk and fell from the roof. Mel, desperately trying to distract herself from the loss of her girlfriend, Niko, agrees to help Maggie find out what the ghost wants and vanquish it. The story then becomes quite personal when Maggie realizes that she is the root cause of the spirit haunting Lucy, the Kappa leader, because Maggie was the one who betrayed Lucy by kissing her boyfriend.

Although initially acting vile and resentful toward Maggie, by the end of the episode, you can definitely feel sympathy for Lucy for the break up that she’s been through and discovering her best friend betrayed and lied to her. Lucy certainly doesn’t deserve to die, which is what the spirit tries to push her into doing by leading her up to the roof and getting her drunk. Maggie and Mel, with the help of Harry, save Lucy after she jumps from the roof, and Maggie’s heart-to-heart apology calms Lucy’s anger, subsequently vanquishing the ghost. Maggie begins to understand the consequences of her mistake and allows Lucy time to cool off, giving up on her dream of becoming a Kappa. It seems the sorority is no longer as important to Maggie, and the sisters perform an initiation ceremony of their own, accepting Maggie into their own magical sisterhood.

The sisters continue to become stronger as a unit in this episode, and even go for drinks together. As well as this, Harry admits that the girls don’t need his added protection anymore but that he doesn’t want to leave, finding comfort and friendship in living with the three of them. It’s nice to see the gang not only bonding over witch responsibilities, but also choosing to spend time together in their social lives — something that was very important in this episode as each sister dealt with their own form of isolation.

Mentions of Niko were scarce in this episode, but Mel is such a strong, resilient character that it makes sense she would want to move on with life as quickly as possible and focus on other things. It’s also clear that Mel will continue to struggle living without Niko, showing how loss and grief don’t have a quick-fix and takes time and space to come to terms with. This is a really human part of the series that the show is exploring really well. Having demons and spirits on a show like this means having to sometimes concentrate on more relatable aspects that viewers can connect with, and Mel and Niko’s relationship and story arc is a great example of this.

Finally, Macy has to deal with something else paranormal in this episode as she searches for answers to Galvin’s mysterious glowing mark. After discovering that she is the only person who can see the mark, Macy goes to a psychic for advice, but the answer she receives isn’t what she expects. Actually, I don’t think anyone expected it. The psychic reveals that Macy has “darkness” inside of her. As well as this, Mel and Maggie use a spell to produce a vision of the past and overhear their mother worrying about her unborn baby, who later grows up to be Macy. Their mother, having the power to see the future, reveals that she believes there is something wrong with the baby. Mel and Maggie decide to keep their discovery a secret from Macy so as not to worry her, but how long before Macy finds out the truth?

The end of the episode was jam-packed with information and cryptic suggestions regarding Macy, including a demon retrieving some of Macy’s blood from the lab where she works, and Macy finding a mysterious hidden key in one of the pillars outside their house. The key could mean anything, but the demon taking some of Macy’s blood implies that Macy might not be 100 percent a good witch, holding something darker inside that the demon wants to awaken and utilize. More is sure to be revealed in the upcoming episodes, but it’s likely that Macy will be faced with an internal battle against her dark urges and her humanity. Will the older sister turn bad, or will she choose to fight it?
