Berlin, Germany (1987)
Though the Berlin Wall ultimately came down in 1989, the conditions that led to its collapse were going on years before its fall. And, if you believe the stories of some German residents, one of those things was a David Bowie concert.
Bowie lived in West Berlin for years in the 1970s, a period which gave rise to three albums and his famous Thin White Duke persona. In June of 1987, he returned to the city to play the Concert for Berlin, a three-day open-air rock festival, during which residents of East Berlin often gathered on the other side of the Wall to listen. He chose to play his iconic hit “Heroes,” and he directly addressed the East Berliners listening before singing it.
Historical people we could meet: Back in 2015, Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi said that he’d love to have Bowie guest star on Doctor Who. That would have been a dream come true for so many people, but the iconic rock star passed away in early 2016. A fictional version isn’t quite the same, but it’s the next best thing.
Potential adventures: A the show must go on-style save the Concert for Berlin romp might be fun to watch. But since many people joked about how they thought the real Bowie was a Time Lord when he died…well, wouldn’t it make a certain amount of sense if he did turn out to be an alien of some stripe? (An alien who defeats communism through the power of music is actually kind of a cool plot, if you ask me.)
