“Puppies Are Forever” – Sia
Speaking of original Christmas tunes, Sia released the holiday album Everyday Is Christmas in 2017, and it’s chock full of new tracks penned by the songstress. Who knows if any of them will become as impactful as “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” but if it were up to me, there are definitely a few that I would nominate.
When it comes to Sia’s discography, we’re used to power ballads and songs with a tougher subject matter, like her hits “Titanium,” “Chandelier,” and “Elastic Heart,” but her holiday album is a complete departure. Along with the lead single “Santa’s Coming for Us,” there are nine other originals, including a love song to puppies.
“Puppies Are Forever” is a really fun track about, what else, puppies! Sia is a staunch animal activist, so not only is the song a fun anthem about loving dogs, but it’s encouraging people not to just buy puppies as a gift and then abandon them months later when the novelty wears off. She also advocates for adopting dogs from the pound instead of buying them and for loving dogs even as they get old: “’Cause they’re so cute and fluffy with shiny coats. But will you love ’em when they’re old and slow?”
We’re so used to hearing holiday songs about Jesus, Santa, or toys, so it was a different spin for Sia to sing about getting a dog for Christmas. Sia is the queen of songwriting, so would you expect anything less?
