Captain Marvel Prelude comic proves Carol Danvers is not to be messed with

Marvel’s Captain Marvel Prelude gives us some context on why Carol Danvers has been missing in action in the MCU, as well as her powerful potential.

It’s been 58 days since we first cried about the “her” to “hero” transition in the first Captain Marvel trailer, and we still aren’t ashamed to be emotionally attached to Carol Danvers. While we’re still waiting for a second trailer to drop and preemptively mourning the Avengers 4 trailers, we aren’t completely contentless when it comes to Captain Marvel, thanks to Marvel’s Captain Marvel Prelude comic.

The prequel comic picks up after the Avengers temporarily disbanded after Captain America: Civil War. As Nick Fury talks to Agent Maria Hill in Captain Marvel Prelude #1, he reveals that he’s hopeful that the Avengers will reunite in the face of a global threat.

Within the comic, Fury tells Hill, “Otherworldly threats are one thing, but this rift [the Sokovia Accords] caused between Stark and Rogers might be something neither one can ever come back from. We can’t afford that kind of infighting.”

Amid there conversation, Fury mentions that Captain Marvel appears to be a last resort to preventing and protecting Earth from imminent threats. When Hill asks if he knows of a hero that he hasn’t mentioned before, Fury references Danvers and why they don’t call her first.

Fury says, “Nah. If we do our job right, we’ll never be in the position of having to call her.”

This doesn’t give us any specific clues as to why Carol Danvers has been so absent in the MCU, despite being a planet-launching hero since the ’90s. However, Fury’s quote suggests Danvers is only summoned in a worst-case-scenario catastrophe.

Given that the Avengers are comprised of a living Norse God, a Hulk, and multiple other super fighters and soldiers, this suggests that, although Fury only calls Danvers as a fail-safe backup plan, she could be more powerful than all the Avengers combined.

After all, Fury is an experienced leader and he wouldn’t logically put all his confidence in one superpower human if he didn’t have confidence that she could clean up a fight that defeated the Avengers.

As the comic syncs up to the credit scene in Avengers: Infinity War, where Fury pages Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel Prelude makes us even more impatient about Captain Marvel’s titular movie premiere.
