Michelle Obama admits she cried on the day of Trump’s inauguration, but the reason why may surprise you.
Michelle Obama recently began touring to promote her new book, Becoming. During the first stop of her tour, which will make 12 stops in total, she discussed multiple aspects of her book with Oprah Winfrey. The event was held in Chicago at the Chicago Bulls arena. During the interview, Michelle spoke about many things in her life including piano lessons she took as a child all the way up to stories about moving out of the White House.
Winfrey and Obama spoke to a sold-out crowd of reportedly 14,000 people. While tje former First Lady never directly criticized Donald Trump, she did talk about one thing that many of us can relate to. Obama explained that she cried the day that Donald Trump got elected on Inauguration Day in 2017.
But, unlike many of us who were crying due to the depressing fact that Trump would soon become president, Michelle said she was crying for other reasons.
“When I got on the plane, I sobbed for 30 minutes. I think it was just the release of eight years trying to do everything perfectly.”
We can imagine that after eight years of her life and all of the intensity and pressures that go into being First Lady, especially given that Barack Obama was the first black president, would make her pretty emotional.
Obama said she turned to her husband, “I said to Barack, ‘That was so hard, what we just did. That was so hard.'”
Although at this event she didn’t give any direct criticism of Trump, Obama does do so in the book.
For example, in Becoming, Michelle Obama touches on Trump starting the birtherism movement that loudly called for Barack Obama to produce his birth certificate and prove his citizenship. She says in the book that this put “my family’s safety at risk” and that this was something for which, “I’d never forgive him.”
Oprah selected the book for her famous book club, and you can purchase it now as it released yesterday.
