Supernatural: Could Michael still be inside of Dean?
By Evie Taylor
Michael has been mostly MIA during Season 14. The Archangel released Dean from his possession in the second episode, but is he really gone?
This week’s episode of Supernatural featured a ghastly Djinn, a being who poisons his victims and drinks their blood. Thanks to an upgrade from season 14’s big bad Archangel Michael, the Djinn in this week’s episode could also see people’s fears and worst nightmares. However, something isn’t quite right when Dean goes up against the monster.
At first, the Djinn thinks that the showdown with Dean is part of the deal he struck with Michael. Michael gave the Djinn enhanced powers, and the Djinn promised to track down hunters and kill as many of them as he could. Fewer hunters would make it so much easier for Michael to take over the world. The Djinn first believes that Michael is still possessing Dean, thinking it is a test to make sure the Djinn was keeping up his end of the bargain and was killing hunters, but Dean soon sets him straight.
When the Djinn realizes that Dean is actually Dean, he attacks and attempts to read Dean’s nightmares and bring them to life. However, the monster doesn’t get far and stumbles backwards in shock, unable to manifest the things Dean fears. Were Dean’s nightmares too traumatic for the Djinn? Dean overpowers the creature and kills him before we get to find out why it couldn’t do anything. Could the situation have something to do with Michael?
Dean may have been immune to the Djinn’s powers. In an attempt to keep his perfect vessel safe and to ensure Dean remained in one piece in case he ever wanted to possess him again, Michael may have given Dean some protections and powers so that the Winchester couldn’t get hurt or killed. However, so far in season 14, Dean hasn’t shown that he has any other kinds of abilities that he may have picked up from Michael — so maybe the Djinn sensed something else. Aside from Dean’s disturbing memories, the Djinn may have seen Michael himself inside of Dean.
Although it seems as though Dean is completely in control and alone inside his own body – even Castiel has been inside Dean’s head and couldn’t find any trace of Michael – the Archangel may have been able to trick Castiel and hide himself inside Dean, waiting for the right moment to make a re-appearance. Michael doesn’t really have anywhere else to go, so it does seem strange that he would leave his perfect vessel so soon. Michael is one of the strongest, most powerful angels in all of creation, so he can’t just possess any human. In order to walk the Earth, Michael needs a vessel that is suited and strong enough to hold his essence.
As our heroes can’t seem to find Michael anywhere, there is a chance that it’s because Michael is right under their noses, hibernating inside Dean whilst his monster minions weaken the competition. As the Djinn initially suspects, it could also be a way of testing the monsters and ensuring his deal is maintained.
While you may think that hiding a whole angel inside a human without anyone realizing may sound impossible, there is a chance that Michael didn’t leave all of himself in Dean. He may have chosen to leave just enough grace so that he can take back control in the future. If Michael left a small amount of grace, it also means that the angel might be tracking and spying on the boys through Dean’s eyes, staying one step ahead of them.
