Riverdale: 4 questions we still have after the flashback episode

Riverdale gives us the ’90s flashback we never knew we wanted. But even as it answered some of our questions, it also gave us new ones to ponder.

There was a lot to love about the Riverdale flashback episode. From the ’90s Easter eggs and call backs, to the lovely Breakfast Club vibes, there was something nostalgic about the entire episode as a whole. And yet, for all the answers we seemed to get from this chapter in the characters’ story, there were also a lot more questions left behind.

Thanks to Alice Cooper, we were all treated to the story of who these parents were when they were at Riverdale High School. We got to see how Alice went from a Southside Serpent bad girl to the woman who would go on to marry Hal Cooper. We watched as FP went from a jock with a future to the leader of the Serpents. And of course, we got the chance to watch as the group known as the Midnight Club delved into the world of Gryphons and Gargoyles.

Speaking of this weird and even cult-like game, we still don’t understand exactly where Gryphons and Gargoyles came from. The teens mention that they had heard whispering about the game, but then never share anything that was whispered. So what exactly did they hear about the game before they started playing it? And how exactly did it come to be in the high school to begin with?

But that’s not all we want to know. During the ascension night party at the high school, we watch as Mr. Featherhead, the principal of the school, arrives just after Alice sees the Gargoyle King. What we don’t know is how he came to drink from the chalices that Alice saw in the girls’ bathroom. We doubt that the principal was the kind of guy who randomly drinks from cups that are sitting around, no matter where he might have found it.

At the same time, we have to wonder why it took so long to find the principal’s body in the school. Even if he was locked in a rarely used closet, it just doesn’t make sense that he was in there that long. But this also raises the question of how did he end up in the closet and who or what carved those symbols into the door?

All in all, the flashback was perfect and campy, giving us insight into how the adults became the people they are today, while also showing us their history with the Gargoyle King. Even with many questions answered, we still have new ones that have our interest.

Of course, we also have to point to the very end of the episode for one of our biggest questions. How exactly did Jughead fall so deep under the spell of Gryphons and Gargoyles so quickly? After everything that has happened, we didn’t really expect to see him leading a new game in the bunker.

Just how far gone is Jughead? He certainly seemed to be in a more manic state than we have ever seen him. His eyes were definitely a bit on the wild and crazy side when he announced he was close to meeting the Gargoyle King for himself. This was a fitting ending to the episode, even as it opened the door to more questions and mystery surrounding the goings-on in Riverdale.

It’s hard to focus on just one amazing moment in this delightful flashback episode of Riverdale. But we have to admit, we loved seeing the younger cast members bringing their parental units to life. And even if we have new questions we want to see answered, we definitely feel like this episode gave us a great look at the adults as high school students.
