Charmed: Why was Macy abandoned by her mother?
By Evie Taylor
Last week’s episode of Charmed revealed a lot more about the Charmed ones’ mother and her powers. Will we discover the reason why she gave up Macy?
In the most recent episode of Charmed, Mel, Maggie and Macy are visited by an Elder, a senior on the witch council. The Elder, called Charity, reveals that the girls’ mother, Marisol, was also on the council, making her an Elder too. The girls seem shocked by this information, having been unaware of this previously. As Elders have some level of authority over regular witches, and band together to make decisions on behalf of witch kind, the girls may have been surprised by this because they didn’t realize their mother was so important or powerful.
After discovering an exorcism spell in the Book of Shadows, the sisters’ Whitelighter, Harry, tells the girls that their mother had the power of prophecy. When Charity appears, she argues that Marisol was powerful — but that her visions didn’t always come true. Marisol’s power of prophecy is very significant to the show because she gave birth to three daughters who would utilize the power of three to vanquish evil. As a result, she could have foreseen her children’s destiny and raised and guided them accordingly as strong women. This might explain why she also decided to bind their powers at birth so that they could lead normal lives before they came of age.
Marisol was presented as a caring mother to Mel and Maggie, but she left her eldest daughter, Macy, to be raised by her dad when she was two years old. Currently, the reasoning behind abandoning Macy is still unknown, however with Marisol’s power of prophecy being revealed, there might be a reasonable explanation. If Marisol envisioned that something bad would happen to Macy if she stayed, then leaving could have been the only way to save her. In addition, Marisol could have seen the future and saw that the only way the girls could become the Charmed ones would be if Macy lived without her mother and sisters until she was older.
On top of this, last week’s episode also included a pretty heartfelt scene between Macy and Charity where they talk about Marisol. Charity, being very close friends with the girls’ mother, said that none of the Elders knew that Macy existed. However, Charity did explain that Marisol once asked her to put a powerful enchantment on her. This spell removed all of the pain and anguish that Marisol had been feeling, following a tragic loss, so that she could carry on living. Charity never knew the reason behind the spell, or why Marisol had felt such pain, but following the reveal of Macy’s existence, she understood that the tragedy had been giving Macy up.
This allowed Macy to have some closure and to understand that her mother did care for her and found that abandoning her was too painful to live with. This revelation also suggests that Marisol was forced to leave Macy, and that it wasn’t her choice. With her power of prophecy, did Marisol leave to protect Macy, or make her the witch that she grows up to be? The girls’ mother having the power to see the future will, no doubt, be important when Macy finally discovers the truth of why she left.
