The Good Place preview: To free will or not to free will?

The Good Place has Eleanor discovering something forgotten this week. It could be pretty much anything, but we have a few of our own theories

With how last week’s episode of The Good Place ended, our study group is finally going to be back together. The last few episodes have had them partnered off to try to save some souls. It’s worked pretty well, but it’ll be nice to have everyone back together again.

Plus Michael dropped that nice big bomb of information on Eleanor at the end of “A Fractured Inheritance.” That probably won’t go super well.

Here’s the official synopsis for this week’s episode, courtesy of NBC:

"Eleanor recalls some forgotten events from her past."

Okay. Once more, The Good Place gives us a very vague synopsis that could mean literally anything. The easiest explanation is that she remembers some sort of horrible thing she did to someone and feels the need to go try to save that person’s soul.

But The Good Place isn’t an ordinary sitcom, of course. So… my current theory is that Eleanor somehow stumbles onto some memories from the past iterations of the Bad Place torture put on by Michael.

It’s all stored somewhere, right? Maybe the bomb of Eleanor loving Chidi in a past torture scenario unlocks some dark recesses of her mind. Something that no amount of reboots or finger snaps can erase. It’s like the data on a computer — it’s buried there somewhere, you just need a way to get to it.

That or perhaps Janet finds a way to use her virtual reality simulator to hack into the Judge’s chambers and sneak away with some data. There’s going to be some sort of crazy loophole. The Good Place is up to something. We just don’t know what yet.

We never know what, really. Plus that machine Janet built is kind of groundbreaking and the show only used it for half an episode.

Next. The Good Place: Let’s talk about the Jeremy Bearimy timeline. dark

Anyway, we’re probably theorizing way too much for this episode. Like I said, it’s more than likely something simple. Like maybe she went on a date with Jason way back in the day and something triggers that forgotten memory.
