Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Tucker teaches us something about Rebecca

While we have seen Rebecca seem to make changes, they never really work out on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Now, though, we are seeing her really tackle her issues in a new way.

Rebecca’s brother Tucker on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend brought up a wonderful point about Rebecca Bunch: She’s growing! At the end of the episode, Rebecca says something to Tucker that really puts into perspective the fact that she knows what her problems are.

Growing up, she went to theater camp against her mother’s wishes and ended up still being a lawyer to appease her. Having Tucker come to her home, seeing his ambition and his drive, she saw what she used to have in herself. The problem? She also saw that Tucker would willingly do whatever for his goals, much like she used to do.

Remember when she moved to West Covina and all but made Josh’s life a living hell just to try and win his affections? Tucker was, essentially, doing the same thing to Rebecca so that he could go on an audition for Peter Pan. Lying, involving her in his schemes, it all screamed “Rebecca,” which makes sense considering he’s her little brother.

Where she shows her growth is in how she treats him at the end of the episode. The old Rebecca may have encouraged it, kept him with her in West Covina and gotten into a whole mess. But with her challenges in the last year and what was happening with Nathaniel, she realized what she needed to do to help Tucker.

Convincing her father to get him a therapist and send him to theater camp, Rebecca puts her own needs aside to make sure that her brother is taken care of in the long run, something she was never given growing up. If someone had sat Rebecca down as a child and helped her, shown her what she needed to do, maybe she wouldn’t be on the path she is now.

Maybe, if someone did for her what she did for Tucker, she wouldn’t have gone to the extreme with Josh or ended up in jail because of Trent. But what this shows, more important, is that she’s willing to put her own selfish nature aside to help him. Sure, she probably thought that she deserved to have someone do this for her when she was younger, but she didn’t turn that into something more.

She, instead, focused on her brother and made sure he was going to get the attention that he needed. Having Rebecca focus on anyone else that she doesn’t have a romantic attachment to is showing a new side of her that is truly better than anything we’ve seen before. She wants to help those around her and care for them in ways she didn’t in the past, and it makes us care for Rebecca in a new way.
