Wonder Woman 1984 writer moves to MCU for unknown Marvel movie

A new report has it that Wonder Woman 1984’s writer will be moving from the DCEU to the MCU to pen an untitled Marvel movie.

As if Marvel Studios would ever show signs of slowing down, a lot of background moving pieces are currently in the works for its slate of movies in 2020 and beyond. So even though the movies for the next two years are pretty set (plus or minus one Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), that doesn’t mean Marvel is sleeping on what movies they can produce next.

Part of all that background movement for their future endeavors includes hiring key players in the movie-making process. And Marvel’s reportedly just tapped its latest writer for an unknown project.

According to That Hashtag Show, the latest writer to come on board is Wonder Woman 1984’s David Callaham. The screenwriter’s projects to date include the Expendables and Godzilla, as well as the in-production Mortal Kombat and Zombieland 2 movies.

There’s a lot of mystery surrounding Callaham’s hiring right now, only because Marvel Studios hasn’t been so transparent about their upcoming projects beyond 2020. Of course, it makes sense for them to want to keep these kinds of things under wraps. You don’t necessarily want to go spilling all your secrets out way before they’re even properly developed.

As That Hashtag Show and a few other outlets have mentioned already, movies like Black Panther 2 are out of the picture because Ryan Coogler is both writing and directing. And it seems like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be sticking with James Gunn’s script. Even The Eternals and the Black Widow solo movie have writers, so this really pushes back the time release of this unknown project — meaning its likely to be out around 2021.

Because this movie is pushed so far out, it really enters the realm of unknown Marvel territory. It’s a land where only rumors stand, and one where Kevin Feige will neither confirm nor deny that it’s a project they’re putting in motion.

So far, the rumored Dark Avengers has been thrown around as one of the possible movies that Callaham could be penning. Depending on how things work with the Fox merger and Sony’s generosity, characters like Venom and Daken (Wolverine’s son) could appear in the movie. It’d be an excellent introduction for Venom to appear in the MCU. And it would also help usher in some of the X-Men characters slowly but surely into the MCU as well.

Screen Rant mentions there’s still the possibility that Callaham could sign on to a sequel to an already-established character in the MCU. This would include Spider-Man 3Ant-Man 3 and Captain Marvel 2, as it’s clear by now that each of these characters will be getting at least three movies just as their predecessors did. And Given Callaham’s background, any of these movies seem quite fit for him.

It may be a while before Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios announce their next phase of movies beyond 2019 and 2020. But we’re likely to see some big new projects (maybe even the rumored ones) come to light to expand the MCU even further in the future.
