Kristin Davis talked to InStyle about Sex and the City, how it holds up to today’s standards of television, and what could have been changed.

Sex and the City is still an iconic New York City television show. If you live in New York, you especially still hear people talking about the show even though it has been off the air for years. While actually living in New York City isn’t really anything like the show, it’s a fantasy of the city that has appealed to many young women since it was on the air.

Kristin Davis, who played Charlotte, talked about the series in an interview with InStyle magazine. She noted that the show still means a lot to many people and that many people find comfort in the show and its escapism and drama.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t get some kind of message either from a friend or on social media of someone saying ‘I’m sick at home and I’m loving watching you guys.”

While she thinks that the show has aged well in this aspect, Davis also notes that other parts of the show haven’t held up so well to modern times and values.

“But times have changed. When we started, there were not shows where women spoke openly about sex—it was shocking. People were upset with us. It was like *gasps,* ‘These women are talking about sex, oh no!’ So I think that we’ve come along way.”

While the show was shocking and groundbreaking in some ways at the time, it didn’t handle all issues very well. There definitely were a variety of problems with how Sex and the City addressed race, sexuality, and gender, and Davis acknowledges this, too.

“Were we to do it now, we’re in different times, and we could really deal with some different topics and possibly deal with some things with a little more enlightenment. For instance, trans rights. We could handle that so much better, obviously, than we did. We could handle racial issues so much better.”

Davis thinks that the show could still be really appealing if it were made in 2018 and that the characters and structure of the series would be essentially similar, saying, “We’re living in a different time; there are different kinds of conversations happening around us at all times. And we could really tackle that, which would be amazing… I would watch that show!”

We would definitely watch that show, too, but we aren’t sure we want a remake. It is interesting to think about how the show would have been different if it had been more sensitive to things like gender identity, however.

Davis also talked about remaining friends with her co-stars over the years. She said that she is still good friends with Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon especially and that, “All of us were there for 20 years. Imagine 20 years of your life. How would we not be in each other’s lives? We were part of something amazing and that will be part of us forever.”

We love to think of these women still being a part of each other’s lives, and, despite its flaws, we still enjoy watching the show when we want to live a dream of shopping, fabulous bars, and lifelong friendships in NYC.
