This Is Us pays tribute to the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting
“Our hearts are broken,” the cast and crew of This Is Us said in response to the synagogue shooting in its TV hometown.
As America grieves the senseless shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, This Is Us honored the 11 lives lost, and six more who were injured, with a solemn tribute at the end of its episode this Tuesday.
Much of the Dan Fogelman created series takes place in Pittsburgh, thus it was truly fitting and touching for the show to do so. The Pearson family, whom fans have come to know and love and often cry over, has deep roots in Pittsburgh. They root for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and just last season, Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia’s Rebecca and Jack traveled to Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field.
At the end of the episode “Kamsahamnida,” a message in black and white appeared, expressing that “Our hearts are broken. We stand with our television hometown of Pittsburgh.”
Executive producer Fogelman shared this message on his own social media, with a second tweet emphasizing Pittsburgh is the hometown for This Is Us. He also shared information for people to donate to the grieving community.
Actors of the show, from Mandy Moore to Justin Hartley, also shared the end card with their own messages for the city and those mourning.
As funerals begin for the victims, the shooter could face the death penalty for what is believed to be the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in U.S. history. The city of Pittsburgh has rallied despite this horrific act. To see support coming from outside, such as what the cast and crew of This Is Us did, proves that in the wake of tragedy, we can and will come together.
Our thoughts also go out to the city of Pittsburgh and the Tree of Life congregation during this difficult time.
