Both Amy and Dinah go into labor on this week’s Superstore, but the two women have very different experiences at the hospital.
It’s delivery day for Dinah and Amy on this week’s Superstore.
The two women have been sporting rounded bellies for a while now after Dinah agreed to carry Glenn and Jerusha’s child, and Amy accidentally got knocked up by her ex-husband, Adam.
Pregnancy treated Dinah fairly well — she grew a tooth during last week’s episode — while Amy began struggling with swollen feet and the notion she’d have to provide for another child with her measly salary, so at least one of the pair is happy to finally be pushing out their little bundle of joy. Of course, no two births are exactly the same. And it sounds like Dinah’s getting the royal treatment as she brings new life into the world while Amy’s forced to slum it in a free clinic.
Thanks to Glenn’s manager status and (we’re assuming) his stellar healthcare program with Cloud 9, Dinah gets to have her own Beyoncé-like birth complete with cushy medical beds, a private room, and the best medical care money can provide. Amy, on the other hand, must head to the local clinic when she begins experiencing labor pains. Since Amy’s higher up on the Cloud 9 chain, it seems strange she’s forced to give birth at a clinic for low-income individuals. But we’re sure the show will use this opportunity to educate us on the unfairness of the health care system, probably with a few jokes thrown in to keep things light.
While Glenn’s coaching Dinah through contractions and Jonah’s servings as Amy’s personal punching bag through her own labor, Garrett’s left to manage the store and come up with a heartfelt congratulations to the new mothers. Garrett’s not the best when it comes to expressing his emotions, so that’s a tall order for the guy.
As strange as it sounds, watching Dinah give birth feels like the biggest payoff to these competing pregnancy storylines. She’s been no-nonsense about this whole affair with hilarious results, and we’re interested to see if she’ll opt for a planned C-section or a natural birth with no drugs. Either sounds like a totally Dinah-way to approach the “miracle” of birth.
And poor Amy. The woman just can’t catch a break. We understand Amy’s character is normally used as an educational tool on this show — a way to represent an underserved community or debate a hot button topic — but it’d be nice to see America Ferrera get to have just one victory on this show. If an easy, painless birth isn’t on the menu, here’s hoping she gets plenty of maternity leave next week.
