A visit from some spiders

Episode: “Chapter One: October Country”

This writer will admit that she’s not really afraid of spiders. They’re creepy and crawly, sure, but they do important work and generally leave you alone.

Sabrina’s spell to get Principal Hawthorne to stay away from school for a few days might make you afraid of spiders. Once she hears that he’s terrified of them, she works up a spell that basically floods his apartment with more arachnids than are healthy for anyone, let alone someone who’s actually scared of them. The image of spiders crawling all over his TV as static plays is enough to haunt your nightmares at night.

Biting the malum malus

Episode: “Chapter One: October Country”

Malum malus, according to that bastion of reliability Google Translate, translates to “bad bad” from the Latin, and Sabrina’s vision after she bites into one is definitely worth the repetition. Although it’s not necessarily scary, it is eerie, thanks to the entire world appearing as if it’s on fire while the Dark Lord seems to pay a visit and witches hang from the trees. This vision ends up being what saves Greendale from the Thirteen later on in the season, but that doesn’t make it any less spooky — and it’s stylish enough to win it a place on this list.
